2019 Jaguar I-Pace: Your Complete Overview
The age of the electric car may be fast approaching, but has it come forward in true style yet?
The new 2019 Jaguar I-Pace is the latest electric car to take the test of whether you can have style, power, and environmental consciousness.
It promises all three but does it measure up at all?
Let’s run it through its paces and find out whether the Jaguar I-Pace is the electric car to turn some heads.
The 2019 Jaguar I-Pace
The 2019 Jaguar I-Pace is a huge step forward in the electric car industry. By the very fact that a premier luxury car company has stepped into the ring with an electric car built from the ground up is astounding.
This marks a pretty radical step forward for the future of the electric car. If Jaguar can make a stylish, powerful, and desirable electric car, then who knows what may come pouring out of the woodwork.
The question remains: how does it hold up? Is it what we all desire, or a dud?
The Technical Details
The I-Pace contains an impressive engine setup. Using two concentric motors on each axle, it creates a constant 4-Wheel drive that can produce up to 394bhp and 513lb ft of torque. This all pushes through a single-speed gearbox.
The lithium-ion battery clocks in at 90kWh and gives the car a 298-mile range. Charging can take a little bit longer than the usual electric car, taking about 10 hours to get from 0 to 80 percent.
The power of the car is a potent standard. It can go from 0 to 60mph in less than 5 seconds and tops out at 124mph.
All of this for a price tag that can squeak by under $90,000 with a host of the usual trappings.
The Driving Feel
The stats look nice, and it is a radical step, but does it have that driving feel you’d expect from a Jaguar?
The Jaguar I-Pace is a massive surprise. The kick to acceleration makes it spike forward with ease and its top end speed is very respectable for what could sell as a “family” car.
The single gearbox makes it easy to do whatever you please without worrying about an improper gear shift.
A low center of gravity and the highest torsional stiffness of any Jaguar out there keep it hugging curves in the right manner.
In short, the Jaguar I-Pace has all that you could look for in a powerhouse luxury car.
The problem comes from an odd place. Many of the high-quality electric vehicles in the market have similar acceleration and relative power. The Jaguar I-Pace goes above and beyond in some areas, but is that enough to make it feel unique?
The Interior Details
The interior of the I-Pace is a mix of spacious quality and a surprising lack of hi-tech futuristic design.
Unlike a Tesla, the Jaguar I-Pace has a rather simple and almost old-school interior. Coming with physical buttons and old school veneer coverings, it almost feels like it should be a decade older car.
While this may be a negative to some and charming to others, the main strength of the I-Pace is the perfect setup of the interior.
With the front wheel shifted forward more than similar designs, there is a great amount of legroom for the driver.
It also has plenty of space to fit four adults with room to spare for comfort. This reveals its real ‘sedan’ purpose.
The Feeling of Ownership
Owning a Jaguar is often a luxurious pleasure. Owning an electric car can be a hassle depending on your need for it. Combining them together makes for an odd split.
The electric car problem has been at the top of a lot of people’s minds. With the release of the Jaguar I-Pace, and with the potential release of many more electric cars on the way, this problem will be looked at a lot more in the near future.
The advertising promises a 298-mile range on the I-Pace. That is possible, on a technical level, but the practical truth is far smaller.
All of the other features of the car drain the battery as well. The 298-mile number is from the absolute pushed limit of the battery, which it won’t reach due to safety restrictions.
In actuality, the range is closer to 200 miles, which is plenty if you are commuting or driving around town but does limit you.
The big battery is nice for pushing the range but takes a long time to recharge from zero.
If you are someone who pushes their car into that range with big road trips and long cruises, you may find disappointment or even end up stranded, or both.
Where to charge it can also be a pain. Most electric car chargers are small, and won’t break you free of those potential 10 hours of downtime.
As the electric car infrastructure grows, this may change. For the near future, you will have to plan your trips and charges around your battery life.
How Does It Measure Up
The Jaguar I-Pace has speed, performance, looks, and a spacious interior. Its price tag doesn’t waver too far off from a brand new Jaguar either.
It still is quite a deal more expensive than the Tesla Model-3, so that puts the I-Pace at a car very much not for everyone.
The single gearbox method may put off some, but the intense and powerful feeling to the driving is up there with some of the best in its class. The single gearbox actually helps you control the acceleration and handling without a worry.
The big concern is and will be for most electric cars, the driving range. For those who are seeking a car for long cruises and high-end performance, they will have to curb themselves around the large but still limiting battery life.
For many, though, this isn’t all that noticeable.
If you are in the price range to consider a potent new Jaguar and want the peace of mind of electric without the docking on performance, the I-Pace does deliver.
